FLOC 2011
In May 2011, the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) staged a demonstration, march and rally in Winston-Salem, NC to promote the rights and welfare of tobacco workers. The events took place outside the annual Reynolds American shareholders' meeting.
A major goal was to pressure Reynold's into discussing with FLOC its responsibility for the human rights of farm workers in its supply chain.

Pilgrimage 2011
The annual Pilgrimage for Justice and Peace, a six-day march with stops in several North Carolina cities, arrived at the Capitol in Raleigh at noon on Good Friday, April 22, 2011.

April 4, 2011 was the 43rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's assassination in Memphis, TN. It was also the day of the We Are One silent vigil and rally at the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh.
Participants included the NAACP, HKonJ, the NC Green Party, farm laborers, the LGBTQ community, labor unions and other citizens concerned with social issues and economic justice.

Wisconsin Workers
On February 26, 2011, people turned out in large numbers across the country to demonstrate support for public workers whose collective bargaining rights were under attack by Wisconsin governor Scott Walker. As these photos show, Raleigh, NC was no exception.
And, as usual for any event sponsored by MoveOn.org, a counter-demonstration was mounted by conservatives and TEA party stalwarts.

HKonJ 2011
Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKonJ), an annual NAACP-sponsored event, provides a venue in which the public can demonstrate its priorities to the North Carolina General Assembly.
In 2011, these participants showed strong support for a 14-point agenda spanning a wide range of socio-economic issues.

Westboro v. Love
The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, apparently incensed by Elizabeth Edwards' advocacy for gay rights, picketed her funeral in December 2010. A counter demonstration, the "Line of Love," turned out in large numbers despite short notice and cold, rainy weather.
The two groups, separated by barricades and Raleigh, NC police officers, faced off from opposite sides of Edenton Street. Their messages differed vastly.
